Henna

henna finger tipsHenna is a natural plant dye which can be used to temporarily dye the skin a red/brown color. This is a safe and painless process that lasts about two weeks. Henna designs can be traditional Indian, African, or Middle eastern designs, but can also reflect a modern and western "tattoo" style. Henna paste (a mixture of henna plant leaves, lemon juice, sugar, and essential oils) is applied to skin in the shape of the desired design. The paste will dry after about 30 minutes. Over the course of the next 4-8 hours the dye will absorb into the surface layers of the skin. The paste is then removed and the "tattoo' is revealed beneath. The color starts out orange and pale and then deepens over the next day or two until it reaches a coltribal hennaor that ranges between chocolate and eggplant, depending on one's own skin-tone. As the skin exfoliates the design slowly fades away. Henna has been used to celebrate weddings and other joyous occasion More on henna and its history.
